The MEGA 65 computer is a wonderful modern realization of Commodore's never released C65.  See the MEGA65 website for more information.  Commodore also designed the 1565 disk drive, an unreleased 3.5 inch prototype drive for the C65.  The MEGA65 designers have yet to release a similar recreation of this drive.  The BitBinders MEGA1581, also known as the 1581M, was created to fill this void.

Our MEGA1581 uses an accurate reproduction of Commodore's 1581 PCB and the exact same components as the original.  This means that compatibility is 100% guaranteed.  For all intents and purposes, it is a Commodore 1581.  It connects to the MEGA65's built in IEC Port and does not require any additional hardware or the MEGA65. 

The MEGA1581 drive comes standard with JiffyDOS firmware which, when combined with appropriate software on the MEGA65, dramatically increases the speed of the drive's trsnsfer rate and also adds many useful commands.  See our Frequently Asked Questions for more information.  Also, a good source for information about using JiffyDOS on the MEGA65 can be found here.

Like our other 1581 compatible drives, this drive uses a modern and efficient power supply.  The MEGA1581 has internal power circuitry that allows us to use any standard "wall wart" transformer between 7.5 and 12 volts (a 9 volt transformer is supplied.)  That means that if something happens to your wall transformer (like misplacing it!) you can grab another that you likely have lying around the house.
